Youth Guarantee

This is a programme designed for young people between the ages of 16 to 19. It will help you develop the skills you need for work and teach you about the hospitality industry. You’ll have the opportunity to gain two nationally recognised certificates and you’ll also gain credits towards the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) Levels 1 and 2.

These courses are designed to give you skills to set you on the path towards a career in hospitality or the wider community. Once you’ve completed this programme you may pathway into more study including the NZ Certificate in Cookery Level 3 and further study in the hospitality Industry.

As part of this course, students are involved in a variety of projects, which can include gardening, fishing and eeling, and then cooking what you catch to serve to others. Some students on the Hastings course caught 16 fish in one day!

These courses are FREE for people aged between 16 and 19. Study is full time and we have a rolling intake, which means you can start at any time during the year. The programme contains two nationally recognised NZQA Qualifications: New Zealand Career in Hospitality Level 2 and the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Level 1.

“My time at Workforce Development has been so great, I have achieved a lot in the past year that I’ve been here!”

Kaylah is studying as part of the Youth Guarantee programme in Hawke’s Bay. She enjoys her time on the course and feels a great sense of achievement from what she has learned so far. When she started at Workforce Development, she had no credits or qualifications. Kaylah has now almost completed all her credits to pass Level 1 and 2. Recently she had success catching a large fish, which the class cooked up for lunch and has successfully gained a part time work position at a local second hand store. Interview skills, letter writing and writing a CV are all skills she has gained during her study. She finds the tutors to be really friendly and supportive and recommends Workforce Development for other young people wanting to get ahead.
